LOS ANGELES — The people who staged Michael Jackson's memorial service have donated $90,000 to build a tribute to fallen Los Angeles police officers.
Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns Staples Center in Los Angeles, donated money received from the sale of 18 luxury suites to guests at the July 7 Jackson memorial.
The company says the decision to donate the money was made before a dispute developed over city funds spent to provide security and other services during the memorial.
Karen Wagener, president of the Los Angeles Police Foundation, says AEG hand-delivered a check for $90,000 to the nonprofit group on Thursday.
Wagener says it will be used to help fund a $620,000 memorial — a brass wall expected to be unveiled in September at the site of a new downtown police headquarters.

Sounds just as well – and serves the purpose!

Speaking of staged, is it possible to create a worldwide production like that in 1 1/2 weeks? The venue was conveniently already leased, but everything else had to be put in to gear quickly. All the legalities would have to have been cleared, the music, pictures & videos chosen, participants had to be rounded up, coached & rehearsed (we're talking hundreds of performers), all the technical details had to be tweeked (lighting, soundboard, stagecrew, cameras, etc.), security officers in place, etc. Without any previous planning, this was quite a show.

Not sure who owns the rights to the memorial. But shouldn't they have dug their hands in their pockets a little further? After all, they sold rights to broadcast the memorial I'm sure. And when the DVD gets released that is even more money in their pocket.
We need to make sure that the state of California gets all the money it needs so that Arnie does not feel he has to make Kindergarten Cop 2 to raise cash.

Yes, that's possible, but would've been only nessecary to do it in such a hurry, if it was real.
We're apeaking here of people, who are in the top league of entertainment, with a huge team to set up everything.
If it was staged, they probably had plenty of time to plan the event.

They didn'T sell the rights to broadcast the event, that was free.

I'm not sure totally about who made what in the whole broadcasting deal. But I know that some deals have been made with regards to the broadcasting of and the DVD of the memorial.
http://www.satellitetoday.com/…..31572.html
As the above article says Intelsat won exclusive satellite rights to the memorial service. And as the last line of the article says: “Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.”
Also with 31 million viewers don't you think the media vultures (CNN, CBS, NBC, FOX, SKY, Etc.) pumped their advertising rates up? I mean 31 million customers all sitting there transfixed on the TV screen – it is big money. Look at how much the Superbowl advertising goes for.
